Retül bike fit technology incorporates three main data points in fit theory:

Bike Fits Must be Dynamic
Most bike fitting specialists fit riders in a static position. This is because the traditional tools of the trade – tape measures and plumb bobs – do not allow accurate measurements while the rider is pedaling. Using motion capture technology, Retül records the rider's positions in motion, therefore creating the most realistic picture of the rider's actual pedal strokes and body positions when out on the road and trails.

Measurements Must be Accurate
Measurements made by traditional tools have one thing in common. They are subject to human error and therefore can be devastatingly inaccurate. Even slight inaccuracies can drastically change the rider's feel after a ride. The Retül system is accurate to within less than a millimeter, creating true objective data which can be utilized by the fitter for the perfect biomechanical fit.

Biomechanics are Best Assessed in Three-Dimensional Space
Fit data collected in a traditional two-dimensional plane (i.e. video-based systems) is fairly limited because the fitter can only look at one view at a time, and those views stand as independent reference points. In order to make the best fit recommendations, the fitter must realize that the front and side views are actually interdependent reference points. In other words, the front and side views must be viewed simultaneously in three dimensions in order to see how all the applicable movements of the body are working together. Retül uses a 3D motion sensor to simultaneously gather data on multiple angles of the rider.

A Durango Bike Fit using Retül technology includes the following steps:

Dr. Ryan Siggins does an initial physical assessment of the rider, and at this point can address the rider's concerns about performance, pain, or any other issues the rider hopes to alleviate during the bike fit. Once this is completed, the Retül process truly begins.

LED markers are strategically placed on eight anatomical points of the rider: the wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, heel, and toe.

As the rider pedals, Retül's sensor bar gathers real-time, three-dimensional data of the rider's pedal strokes and movements. Retül's rotating platform allows the us to collect data for both sides of the rider without the rider leaving the bike.

The rider's data is compiled into a reader-friendly report for analysis. Now we can assess the rider's position and make necessary adjustments.

The Zin, Retül's handheld digitizer, allows us to digitally measure the rider's bike at 13-15 points, depending on the bike. The Zin can measure fixed points, contours, and curves, and provides a complete digital map of the bike.

The fit information is saved and stored on our computer. The data includes the rider's personal profile, specific data and measurements from the fit, bike measurements, and the rider's final fit position. The fitter will be able to access and print these records for comparison and tracking of historical fit data for the client.

What are the benefits of a proper bike fit?
A proper bike fit is essential for injury prevention and maximized efficiency. An optimal position on the bike will allow for greater comfort and enjoyment while riding. All bodies are different and your position on the bike should reflect your biomechanics.

Why get fit with Retul 3D motion capture technology?
The best way to analyze a rider's efficiency is to observe and measure the rider while he or she is pedaling the bike. Retul 3D motion capture technology simultaneously measures three planes of movement on the rider as he or she is in motion. Retul averages the rider's pedal strokes to provide a comprehensive data set reflecting the rider's movements. Only at this point can a bike fit expert properly evaluate changes to a rider's position. Attempts to analyze the rider in a static position, or only in two dimensions, will not provide data at the same level of accuracy as 3D motion capture.

Who can benefit from a bike fit?
Generally, if you are serious enough to clip into a bike, you will benefit from a bike fit. Whether you are a professional or recreational rider, getting the proper bike fit is an effective yet economical way to improve performance.

How long does a Retul fit take?
An average fit at Durango BIke Fit lasts 90 minutes. However, if you have major adjustments or component changes, the fit may be longer.

How is fit data shared with the rider?
The Retul software archives data for every rider and his or her bike/bikes. The client receives a report of the final fit data, which includes body measurements and angles, as well as bike set-up and measurements.

Retul software is designed specifically for bike fitting. All data collected in the pre-fit interview is input into specific fields. All rider interview and fit data is stored in individual client files, which can be accessed at any time to compare previous fittings with new data. Readings taken throughout the dynamic 3D motion capture process are immediately processed and a report is generated. Dr. Ryan Siggins then analyzes the data from this sample and evaluates the need for changes in the rider’s position. Once changes are made, the process is repeated to verify effectiveness. This new data then becomes part of the final report, in addition to post-fit bike and equipment measurements. The software can track information for multiple bikes for each client so that fits across categories (road, mountain, cross, etc.) are distinct. A historical position report can be generated at the push of a button from any of these files for quick comparison or reference. The goal was to create useful software that collates and keeps information organized for maintaining client history and easy accessibility.

Retül is Active
The Retul system uses infra-red LEDs (light emitting diodes) that get placed on the body in specific skeletal locations. Active systems differ from passive systems in that the tripod mounted LED sensor is tracking the light directly from the source (the LED diodes). Passive systems use reflection (light returned to its source via a material that repels the light source) to track markers. The problem with reflection is that many shoes, clothes, bikes, and other objects have a lot of reflective points on them, so false images known as artifacts get picked up by the system. In most cases, the user has to go into software, distinguish between the desired markers and manually delete these artifacts. In a shop with windows and shiny bike parts everywhere, this can be highly problematic, as covering all of those sources is a near impossibility, requiring the time consuming removal of artifacts before data collation can begin. Retül's active system does not suffer from this problem. The active system flashes each LED discreetly as the infrared light travels from the LEDs on the body points to the sensor on the tripod. The sensor then triangulates the position of the LED in true 3D space. Our system can track these points to within a millimeter of true position. Data collation is immediate and fast.

Retül is Fast
The system flashes an LED every 2.1 milliseconds – that is 476 times per second or Hertz. The system takes a full set of body measurements every 34 milliseconds, or 29 full sets of body data per second. Our sample sizes, taken dynamically, last anywhere from five seconds to five minutes. The software processes all of that data in seconds, synchronizing the eight data points tracking them across longitudinal, vertical and horizontal planes.

Retül is Synchronized
Synchronization yields body location intelligence. The receiver knows what LED is flashing and where it is on the body. The software automatically, by skeletal position, identifies the proper LEDs for the measurements of each marker's position. This is virtually automatic, unlike in passive systems, in which the user must tell the system what reflection images are related to what marking point. There is no post-processing needed with Retül's software, so reports are accurate, 3D reports are generated immediately for viewing.

Ryan…in his own words: I have always been a sports nut. It started young when my dad bought me a subscription to Sports Illustrated – I would read every issue cover to cover. My friends used to call me the sports encyclopedia. They could ask me anything, I would have the answer. I played nearly every sport, but in high school I migrated to golf, mainly because of the individual aspect of the game. My senior year, I won the conference championship and earned a golf scholarship to college.

My first year of college I wasn’t happy at the school I went to. My passion for golf was wearing out, and I wanted to try new sports, sports that got me into nature. I moved from southern Michigan to as far north as I could get, Northern Michigan University in Marquette, a town nestled along Lake Superior surrounded by the forest. Although I grew up on a farm being outside most of time, it was never like Marquette. Marquette is a town much like Durango, the outdoor sirens beckon us every minute. I found….. If you have found the freedom of what skiing and biking can give you, you know the feeling I am referring to. Most of my free time was spent skiing in the winter, and learning to mountain bike in the summer. It was a whole new direction for my life.

Naturally, I quickly landed in the exercise science program at NMU. The environment was perfect for me. I was an athletic trainer for the elite NMU hockey team for two seasons, and also had opportunities to study at the Olympic Training Center. I loved being around high level athletes. It was inspiring to harness their energy and translate that into my own life, blending my sports and studies. After NMU, I moved to not so glamorous Davenport, Iowa and Palmer College of Chiropractic for the next phase of my life. 4 years of cornfields and world class education. No forests, no skiing, no mountain biking, just a vision for blending sports medicine and chiropractic. I dreamed of blending and delivering what I was learning to friends that share the same desires.

I find no seams or separations in my life. Ripping a piece of alpine single track takes the same focus as creating a relationship with a client recovering from an injury. Now I spend my time skiing, biking and riding motocross. My life is a blend of all those who have inspired me. My love of bikes, skiing, health and performance is intertwined everyday in my life. I see life as an opportunity to meld my passions into what fuels me everyday, and help those around meld theirs.
